About the position

The Pharmacy Tech II position at LifePoint Health in Fort Mohave, Arizona, is a full-time role that operates under the supervision of a pharmacist. This position is integral to the pharmacy department, performing routine duties related to the packaging, distribution, and record-keeping of pharmaceutical supplies. The pharmacy technician will assist in preparing compounded and intravenous medications, including total parenteral nutrition products and chemotherapeutic agents. The role requires a consistent demonstration of the ability to assess situations, consider alternatives, and choose the appropriate course of action. The technician may also work closely with the pharmacist in processing physician orders for medications by entering information into the medication management system in an unverified status. Additionally, the technician may educate, train, and oversee the activities of Pharmacy Technicians, Technician Externs, and Volunteers, ensuring that they possess the necessary knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Key responsibilities include selecting and preparing medications as indicated on patient medication orders, charging and crediting patients for medications and intravenous solutions, and restocking medications. The technician will also attend to customer inquiries, serve as a liaison between customers and pharmacists, and manage prescription refill requests. Inventory management is another critical aspect of the role, which involves identifying medications for reorder, receiving and restocking medications, and addressing issues with shorted or unusable items. The technician will compound specialty medication products, repackage bulk medications, and assist in the preparation and labeling of intravenous medications using proper sterile techniques. Quality control activities, such as monthly inspections and equipment maintenance, are also part of the job. The position may require the use of automated dispensing technology and necessitates adherence to established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. The technician is expected to provide excellent service to all customers of Valley View Medical Center by consistently demonstrating core and leader behaviors. Off-site travel may be required, and the technician must possess a valid driver's license and be eligible for coverage under the company's auto insurance policy. The essential functions of this position are intended to provide a general overview of the role and are not exhaustive of all duties that may be assigned by the immediate manager.

Responsibilities

  • Selects and prepares medications under direct supervision as indicated on patient medication orders.
  • Charges and credits patients for medications and intravenous solutions as appropriate.
  • Attends to customers and answers telephones in a courteous and timely manner, serving as a liaison between the customer and the pharmacist.
  • Identifies medications and other items for reorder to maintain a continuous inventory of medications and supplies.
  • Compounds specialty medication products and repackages bulk medications into unit of use packaging.
  • Assists in preparing and labeling intravenous medications including total parenteral nutrition products and chemotherapeutic agents using proper sterile and aseptic technique.
  • May use automated dispensing technology to restock medications to nursing and ancillary areas after they are checked by a pharmacist.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; GED or equivalent accepted.
  • Pharmacy technician and/or trainee licensure in the state of Arizona required.
  • Must obtain pharmacy technician certification within six months if not already certified.
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Good organizational, problem-solving, and computer skills are necessary.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills for interfacing with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and other contacts.

Nice-to-haves

  • Pharmacy technician experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of medication management information system software and automated dispensing systems preferred.
