About the position

The Pharmacy Tech II - IV Room position at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is a full-time role focused on preparing and distributing routine dosage orders, prepackaging pharmaceuticals, and preparing sterile compounds as directed. The technician will be responsible for measuring, mixing, counting, labeling, and recording amounts of dosages and prescriptions. This role also includes precepting and training lower-level pharmacy technicians and assisting pharmacists in the dispensing of prescriptions. The position requires a high school diploma or GED along with two years of job-specific experience, ideally obtained in a related work unit at UMMC. The technician must hold a Pharmacy Technician Certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcare Association (NHA), and must be registered with the Mississippi State Board of Pharmacy. The role demands knowledge of procedures and standards for labeling and dispensing prescribed medications, as well as proficiency in using personal computers and related software applications. Strong verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to perform basic supervisory functions are essential. The technician will also need to sort, check, count, and verify numbers accurately.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the preparation and dispensing of prescriptions; counts, packages, and labels dosages.
  • Prices and files prescriptions.
  • Adds measured drugs or nutrients to intravenous solutions under sterile conditions to prepare intravenous (IV) packs under supervision.
  • Serves as preceptor of Pharmacy Tech I's to include training and real-time feedback and evaluation.
  • Coordinates regulatory documentation and daily processes specific to the area.
  • Cleans and helps maintain equipment and work area per established procedures.
  • Accesses patient profiles and electronic health records as needed to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Participates in medication-related charge documentation and submission activities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of job-specific experience that allows for precepting of employees in the area.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or certification administered by the National Healthcare Association (NHA).
  • Pharmacy Technician registration with the Mississippi State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Knowledge of procedures and standards for the labeling and dispensing of prescribed medications.
