About the position

The Pharmacy Technician II position at UNM Hospitals is a part-time, PRN role located in Albuquerque, NM, offering a pay range of $16.49 to $24.08 per hour. This position requires the technician to perform a variety of duties under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, encompassing both inpatient and outpatient pharmacy tasks. In the inpatient setting, responsibilities include answering pharmacy phones, triaging medication requests, and delivering medications, including controlled substances, to patients. In the outpatient setting, the technician will engage with the pharmacy management system to enter patient information, allergies, and prescription details, as well as fill prescriptions accurately. The technician must possess a solid understanding of medical and pharmaceutical terminology, symbols, and abbreviations used in pharmacy practice. They will be responsible for ensuring adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures while providing patient care across various age groups, including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. The role also involves data entry, inventory management, and assisting with the implementation and maintenance of pharmacy technology systems such as Pyxis and RxRobot. Additional responsibilities include maintaining logs for narcotic inventory, assisting with the preparation and distribution of medications, and participating in the development of policies and procedures. The technician will also perform basic cashiering duties in the outpatient setting, including collecting payments and balancing the register. The position requires a commitment to professional development and staying updated on new trends and innovations in pharmacy practice.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties of a Technician Pharmacy I and II under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
  • Answer pharmacy phones and triage medication requests.
  • Deliver replenishments including controlled substances and patient-specific medications.
  • Enter patient information, allergies, and prescription information into the pharmacy management system.
  • Fill prescriptions accurately and efficiently.
  • Order medications from wholesalers and manage inventory.
  • Assist with the implementation and maintenance of pharmacy technology systems.
  • Maintain logs for narcotic inventory and controlled substance records.
  • Assist in the preparation and distribution of medications, including compounding and preparing various dosage forms.
  • Participate in professional group meetings and stay updated on pharmacy trends.
  • Perform basic cashiering duties and manage prescription payments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician in NM within 60 days.
  • National Board Pharmacy Technician Certification within 60 days.
  • 1 year of directly related experience in pharmacy.
  • Basic understanding of pharmacology and pharmacy references.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish or other native languages such as Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo.
  • Experience with automated pharmacy systems like DoseEdge and Cerner.
