About the position

The Pharmacy Technician II position at Trinity Health is a full-time role that operates under the direct supervision of a registered Pharmacist. The primary purpose of this position is to perform various duties that are deemed acceptable by the State Board of Pharmacy. These duties include compounding medications, coordinating the continuation or discontinuation of services, processing refill prescriptions, and documenting all actions in the patients' records. The technician will also communicate with patients regarding the supply and delivery of medications, assist in the preparation of I.V. medications, and maintain a clean and organized pharmacy environment. In this role, the Pharmacy Technician will be responsible for maintaining all related prescription and compounding logs, delivery manifests, and any other files as determined by the Pharmacy Manager or Pharmacist in charge. The technician will clean the pharmacy and compounding area according to established policies and procedures, maintain pharmacy-related equipment, and perform aseptic validation testing procedures while keeping accurate records of those results. Daily responsibilities also include performing temperature checks on refrigerators, freezers, and drug storage areas, assisting with biohazard waste disposal, and participating in the orientation and training of pharmacy personnel. The technician will actively participate in the branch's quality assurance program, on-call rotation, and pharmacy team meetings. They will communicate any concerns, questions, or complaints from patients or caregivers to the appropriate supervisor and assist in the Performance Improvement (PI) Program Coordination. This includes helping to develop and implement the PI plan, identifying goals and patient outcomes, and reporting on activities and outcomes. The technician will also be responsible for accurately preparing and assembling patient-specific supplies for delivery, programming IV pump settings, and ensuring all tasks are completed in accordance with established guidelines and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Compounds medication under the supervision of a registered Pharmacist.
  • Coordinates continuation or discontinuation of services.
  • Processes refill prescriptions and documents in patients' records.
  • Communicates with patients about supply and deliveries of medications.
  • Assists in the preparation of I.V. medications and supplies for clients.
  • Maintains all related prescription and compounding logs, delivery manifests, and other related files.
  • Cleans the pharmacy, compounding area, and warehouse per policy and procedure.
  • Maintains pharmacy-related equipment and documents appropriately.
  • Performs aseptic validation testing procedures and maintains a record of results.
  • Maintains quality control logs/notebook and performs daily temperature checks on storage areas.
  • Assists with biohazard waste disposal in accordance with EPA, OSHA, and state guidelines.
  • Assists with the orientation and training of pharmacy personnel.
  • Participates in branch quality assurance program and on-call rotation.
  • Communicates concerns, questions, and complaints from patients to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement (PI) Program Coordination.
  • Cleans and calibrates IV pumps and compounding equipment per guidelines.
  • Accurately prepares and assembles patient-specific supplies for delivery.
  • Programs or double checks IV pump settings for accuracy prior to delivery.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Pharmacy Technician meets requirements for licensure/certification in Iowa.
  • IV compounding experience.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent math skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Self-directed with excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to function well as part of a team.
  • Availability for full-time, regular daytime hours and ability to work some on-call hours.
  • Two years of Pharmacy Technician experience preferred.
