About the position

Maryland Oncology Hematology is seeking a Pharmacy Technician II to join our dedicated team. This position is crucial in providing advanced cancer care in a supportive and passionate environment. The Pharmacy Technician II will work under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist within a licensed pharmacy, performing essential technical tasks related to medication preparation, distribution, record keeping, and inventory control. The role requires adherence to strict compliance with the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards. It is important to note that certain tasks may be regulated by state law, which may limit the responsibilities of some incumbents based on their licensure status. In this role, the Pharmacy Technician II will be responsible for preparing medication orders, ensuring completeness of information, verifying patient details, and obtaining proper physician authorization. The technician will also check for insurance approvals before proceeding with medication admixture, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in accordance with departmental guidelines. The position involves calculating correct dosage volumes, maintaining drug information, and ensuring proper disposal of materials used in the preparation of chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy IVs. Additionally, the technician will be responsible for maintaining accurate logs, conducting quality assurance activities, and assisting in inventory control of medications. The work environment is dynamic and requires a full range of body motion, including manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination. The technician will regularly interact with patients and may be exposed to toxic substances and medicinal preparations. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about contributing to patient care in a fast-paced oncology setting.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares medication orders by compounding or admixing medications under supervision of a registered pharmacist.
  • Checks all orders for completeness of information and verifies patient information and proper physician authorization.
  • Checks all orders for insurance approval before admixing and admixtures drugs as ordered by physician in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Calculates correct dosage volumes, converting between metric and apothecary equivalents.
  • Maintains indigent patient drug program as assigned and counts controlled drugs weekly, maintaining records.
  • Maintains current drug information and MSDS sheets, properly disposing of materials used when mixing IVs.
  • Cleans hood daily or as stated in policy and procedures and logs and dates all drugs being used.
  • Checks drugs monthly for outdates and performs other quality assurance activities as assigned.
  • Keeps accurate temperature logs and logs on all protocol drugs and patient assistance drugs.
  • Maintains proper control documentation of medications, including lot numbers, and completes inventory control of medications.
  • Receives and shelves medications, assisting lead pharmacy technician in ensuring adequate drug supplies in all departments.
  • Prepares labels, files, and prepares billing, and performs efficient data entry into pharmacy systems.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum three to five years experience in a pharmacy with I.V. skills.
  • I.V. certification preferred.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician certificate or State Pharmacy Board requirement recommended.
