About the position

The Pharmacy Tech III Dispensing Cabinet Coordinator plays a crucial role in the Inpatient Operations pharmacy team at Duke University Hospital. This position is responsible for managing and maintaining medication dispensing systems and code carts, ensuring efficient medication distribution, system maintenance, and compliance with safety standards across various locations, including off-site facilities. The role requires a blend of technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to enhance patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and replenish inventory at off-site automatic dispensing cabinets (ADCs) to ensure optimal par/restock levels and monitor medication expirations.
  • Administer user profile configurations and access rights on the server, including account management.
  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance tasks on ADCs, including replacing defective components and ensuring cleanliness.
  • Address and resolve issues related to medication shortages, recalls, and dispensing errors promptly.
  • Support the deployment of new Omnicell systems and contribute to strategic planning for enhancements.
  • Oversee monthly inventory assessments for medications and respond to inventory discrepancies.
  • Develop, evaluate, and revise policy and procedure documents for ADC operations and maintenance.
  • Provide training and guidance to other pharmacy technicians on ADC operational procedures.
  • Inspect, build, and track code carts to ensure compliance and readiness for emergency use.
  • Audit and replenish inventory in code carts in alignment with DUH Pharmacy's Code Blue policy.
  • Travel to off-site locations to replenish and troubleshoot code carts and ADCs.
  • Formulate and uphold policy and procedure documentation for code cart management.
  • Provide specialized training on code cart management and emergency preparedness protocols.
  • Act as the pharmacy liaison for the Duke Patient Response oversight committee.
  • Staff inpatient operations pharmacy to support ongoing needs and maintain proficiency in core functions.
  • Liaise with Omnicell support for troubleshooting and system updates.
  • Respond to requests for ADC and code cart assistance.
  • Provide feedback for continuous improvement in management processes.
  • Stay updated with industry practices and participate in training opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited pharmacy technician-training program, or acceptance into pharmacy school, or one year of pharmacy or healthcare-related experience.
  • Minimum of two years of pharmacy technician experience is required.
  • North Carolina Board of Pharmacy registration is required.
  • Pharmacy Technician certification from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or ExCPT is required.
  • Considerable knowledge of drug names, medical terminology, and pharmaceutical calculations is necessary.
  • Proficient computer skills including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Critical thinking skills with the ability to implement solutions are necessary.
  • Excellent customer service skills with empathy in interactions are required.
  • Strong organizational skills to effectively manage time and resources are needed.

  • College coursework in business/management or position-specific advanced coursework is preferred.
