About the position

The Pharmacy Technician Intern at Wellstar MCG Health is responsible for preparing, compounding, and dispensing medications under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This role requires proficiency in all pharmacy technician responsibilities and duties, which must be demonstrated through supervised observation and annual competency assessments. The position involves routine exposure to chemotherapy and other hazardous drugs as classified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). It is essential for the intern to obtain CPhT certification within 270 days of employment, as this certification is a condition of employment. Failure to maintain this certification will result in termination of the technician intern position. The Wellstar pharmacy technician training program is a comprehensive 10-week (400 hours) training course designed to provide on-the-job training for pharmacy technicians seeking national certification. The program includes classroom instruction and hands-on training in both community and hospital pharmacy environments. Candidates who successfully complete the training program and obtain their CPhT certification may be considered for any open positions that become available, although completion of the program does not guarantee future employment opportunities with Wellstar. Core responsibilities include medication distribution, where the intern must prepare medications for dispensing, ensure the correct medication and dosage, and deliver medications securely to appropriate units while maintaining patient confidentiality. The intern will also be involved in product preparation, including compounding ointments and solutions, and managing the Automatic Dispensing Cabinet (ADC) by adding users, loading medications, and monitoring inventory levels. Other miscellaneous activities include repackaging medications, providing customer service, processing charges, ordering supplies, and ensuring compliance with controlled substance regulations. The intern will also participate in educational activities, including didactic learning and rotations in retail and inpatient pharmacy settings.
