At Carilion Clinic, the role of a Certified Pharmacy Technician Lead transcends the traditional responsibilities of dispensing medications and providing advice. The Lead Pharmacy Technician operates under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist, playing a crucial role in delivering high-quality pharmaceutical care to our customers. This position is pivotal in ensuring that patients receive friendly and accurate service, and it is essential that the Lead Technician is a reliable source of expertise for those who depend on our services. The Lead Pharmacy Technician's responsibilities encompass various critical areas, including Medication Distribution, Sterile Product Preparation, Inventory Control, and coordination of the Medication Assistance Program, as well as Retail Pharmacy operations. This role involves directing and supporting the daily workflow of pharmacy technicians, orienting and training new staff on their responsibilities, and providing valuable input during performance improvement discussions. The Lead Technician also plays a key role in staff performance appraisals and disciplinary actions, ensuring that all team members are held to the highest standards of practice. In addition to these leadership responsibilities, the Lead Pharmacy Technician is tasked with maintaining the technician work schedule and ensuring that all staff members have current licensure displayed in accordance with Board of Pharmacy guidelines. This position requires a proactive approach to troubleshooting and supporting all pharmacy staff, fostering an environment of collaboration and continuous improvement. The Lead Technician must also maintain familiarity with a large inventory of medications, demonstrating a strong attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Pharmacist in providing Pharmaceutical Care.
  • Direct and support technician's daily workflow.
  • Orient and train staff on responsibilities and workflow.
  • Provide input for technician performance improvement discussions.
  • Assist with disciplinary actions and performance appraisals.
  • Prepare and maintain technician work schedule.
  • Ensure staff licensure is current and displayed per BOP guidelines.
  • Provide support and troubleshooting to all staff members.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Successful completion of an approved Pharmacy Technician training course is preferred.
  • Three years of experience as a pharmacy technician with 1 year previous work experience in the desired area of the lead position.
  • Registration with the Virginia Department of Health Professionals required.
  • Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician is required within 9 months of hire.
  • Ability to maintain familiarity with a large number of medications (1000-2000).
  • Customer service orientation is essential.
  • Knowledge and use of general office equipment and procedures, including computer/keyboard.
  • Ability to solve simple mathematical and logistical problems in the work environment.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are necessary.
  • Ability to effectively budget time and work efficiently and accurately with minimal supervision.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous staff management or other management experience is preferred.
