About the position

The Pharmacy Technician Non-Certified position at Beacon Health System is a full-time role located at 615 North Michigan Street, South Bend, IN. This position reports directly to the Pharmacy Manager and operates under the clinical supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The primary responsibility of the pharmacy technician is to assist in providing prescriptions for patients in a retail pharmacy setting while adhering to departmental policies, procedures, and legal and regulatory requirements. The technician plays a crucial role in maintaining inventory to meet customer demand, minimize costs, and maximize profitability, all while committing to delivering an excellent customer service experience. In this role, the pharmacy technician will receive prescriptions from patients, gather complete information, and enter it into the Pharmacy Information System. They will fill patient prescriptions accurately, affixing cautionary statements and explanation labels as needed, and ensure that each prescription is checked by a pharmacist before distribution. The technician will also handle insurance claims, facilitate successful prescription claim processing, and utilize the IVR system to enhance workflow efficiencies. Safety is paramount, and the technician will use barcode scanning technology to ensure the highest levels of patient safety. The position also involves inventory management, where the technician will check supplies for outdated items, balance cash drawers, and assist with financial reporting. They will be responsible for ordering quality inventory, maintaining efficient inventory levels, and processing returnable goods for credit. Customer service is a key component of this role, as the technician will answer phone calls, triage customer inquiries, and work cooperatively with other departments to provide requested medications and supplies. Additionally, the pharmacy technician will participate in the orientation of new staff, assist in compliance activities, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives within the department. The role requires a commitment to ongoing education and maintaining licensure in good standing. The working conditions may involve exposure to minor operating equipment and chemical solution hazards, and the technician will be expected to work rotating weekends as part of their schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Receives prescriptions from patients and enters information into the Pharmacy Information System.
  • Fills patient prescriptions with correct medication and affixes cautionary statements and explanation labels as needed.
  • Ensures appropriate patient teaching sheets and medication guides are attached to prescriptions.
  • Calls insurance companies to facilitate successful prescription claim processing and prior authorization requests.
  • Utilizes the IVR system to maximize workflow efficiencies.
  • Completes controlled substance C-II counts and maintains accurate logs per department policy.
  • Triages patient or customer drug information questions to the pharmacist as per Board regulations.
  • Processes individual patient refill requests sent by email, phone, IVR system, or computer.
  • Assists identified patients by referral to the Medication Assistance Program or identifying manufacturer's coupon programs.
  • Follows processes for filling prescriptions to meet all federal and state laws and regulations.
  • Audits prescriptions waiting to be picked up by patients and processes returns as needed.
  • Checks supplies and medications for outdated items monthly and balances cash drawer daily.
  • Completes ordering of quality inventory to meet customer demand and minimize costs.
  • Maintains efficient inventory par levels of office supplies and runs daily sales analysis reports.
  • Receives medications and supplies from wholesalers daily and processes returnable goods for credit as needed.
  • Participates in orientation of new staff members and assists in compliance activities.
  • Maintains quality logs such as temperature monitoring logs and compounding logs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Valid Indiana Pharmacy Technician License is required.
  • Previous work experience in a pharmacy (hospital or retail) is required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is necessary.
  • Computer and math skills are essential.
  • Successful completion of Pharmacy Technician Certification Program is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification is preferred but not mandatory.
