About the position

The Pharmacy Technician position at Baptist Hospitals of Southeast Texas is a per diem role that requires flexibility in scheduling, as it involves variable shifts. The primary responsibility of the Pharmacy Technician includes managing unit dose medications, preparing intravenous admixtures, and maintaining floor stock while ensuring accurate record-keeping and charging. This role is crucial in supporting the hospital's mission of providing Sacred Work to all patients and visitors. The Pharmacy Technician will be expected to perform essential duties that include making nursing unit rounds to deliver labeled medications and controlled substances, answering phone inquiries, and providing information or directing questions to the appropriate personnel. In addition to these responsibilities, the Pharmacy Technician will be involved in unit-dose packaging, which entails converting bulk medications into units of use and documenting this process accurately. The technician will also participate in the check-tech-check process, fill drug replacement orders for various departments, and maintain appropriate inventory levels. This includes conducting cycle counts, stocking shelves, and monitoring medications for expiration, ensuring that all expired or expiring medications are returned to the pharmacy. The role requires a solid understanding of medication dispensing and adherence to hospital and departmental policies that affect the technician's responsibilities. The position is designed for individuals who are detail-oriented and possess the necessary skills to work in a fast-paced hospital environment. The Pharmacy Technician will be expected to maintain current knowledge of operational policies and procedures that impact their role, ensuring compliance and safety in medication management.

Responsibilities

  • Makes nursing unit rounds and delivers labeled medications, controlled substances, and pharmaceutical supplies.
  • Answers telephone and provides information as requested or refers questions to appropriate personnel.
  • Responsible for unit-dose packaging the bulk medications into unit of use, and accurate documentation of the function.
  • Performs reconciliation of patients on I.V. therapy in the hospital and prepares admixtures utilizing aseptic techniques.
  • Participates in check-tech-check.
  • Fills drug replacement orders to various departments accurately and maintains par levels.
  • Assists in managing inventory by conducting cycle counts, stocking shelves, and notifying any drugs that will be expiring or in need of ordering.
  • Monitors and returns all expiring/expired medications throughout the hospital to pharmacy.
  • Utilizes knowledge regarding the dispensing of medications/pharmaceuticals in performance of identified responsibilities.
  • Maintains current knowledge of hospital and departmental operational policies and procedures which impact on position responsibilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1 - 3 years experience in hospital pharmacy operations required.
  • Pharmacy Technician Registration in the State of Texas.
  • CPhT certified.
  • IV Certification within 3 months of hire (ie: Sterile Product Preparation Certificate, Sterile Compounding and Aseptic Technique).
