The Pharmacy Technician at Keck Medicine of USC plays a crucial role in the healthcare system by preparing and distributing medications for patient consumption. This position operates under the general supervision of a licensed pharmacist and adheres to standard departmental procedures. The technician is responsible for various essential duties, including drug distribution and intravenous admixture throughout the hospital and/or infusion center. The role requires competency in performing all aspects of the Pyxis automated dispensing systems, ensuring that all medications are appropriately barcoded, and maintaining an accurate controlled substance inventory utilizing the CII Pyxis system, which is specific to Keck Medicine. In addition to medication preparation and dispensing, the Pharmacy Technician is tasked with generating revenues by calculating, recording, and issuing charges or billing. Maintaining a safe and clean pharmacy environment is paramount, and the technician must comply with all procedures, rules, and regulations. Consistent documentation of pharmacy log sheets, completing monthly expiration medication assignments, and competency in repackaging and unit-dosing medications using the MILT4 program are also key responsibilities. The technician must demonstrate appropriate use of technology, including computer systems and telecommunications, to triage workflow for efficient medication delivery, which includes checking medication history, printing labels, and checking drip rates. The role also involves maintaining pharmacy inventory by checking stock, assisting in restocking and rotating medications and supplies, and providing timely assistance to healthcare providers through phone calls. Effective time management and the ability to prioritize responsibilities are essential for maintaining workflow during shifts. The Pharmacy Technician may also be assigned additional duties as needed, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the pharmacy department.
