The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for preparing and distributing medications for patient consumption under the general supervision of a licensed pharmacist and in accordance with standard departmental procedures. This role requires the technician to work under the direct supervision of the pharmacist at all times, ensuring that all medication distribution and intravenous admixture tasks are performed accurately and safely throughout the hospital and/or infusion center. The technician must demonstrate competency in performing all aspects of the Pyxis automated dispensing systems and assist in ensuring that all medications are appropriately barcoded. In addition to medication preparation, the Pharmacy Technician generates revenues by calculating, recording, and issuing charges or billing. Maintaining a safe and clean pharmacy environment is crucial, which includes complying with all procedures, rules, and regulations. The technician is responsible for consistent documentation of all pharmacy log sheets and completing monthly expiration medication assignments. Competency in repackaging and unit-dosing medications using the MILT4 program, as well as aseptic technique, is required. The technician must also utilize technology effectively, including computer systems like Cerner and Power Chart, to triage workflow for efficient medication delivery, which includes checking medication history, printing labels, and checking drip rates. Maintaining pharmacy inventory is another critical responsibility, which involves checking pharmacy stock, assisting in restocking, and rotating medications and supplies. The technician is expected to assist healthcare providers with phone calls in a timely manner, answering questions and triaging calls to the appropriate personnel. Effective time management is essential for maintaining shift-specific workflow, and the technician must be able to prioritize responsibilities appropriately. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
