About the position

The Pharmacy Technician Specialty position at Wellstar Health System involves a range of responsibilities centered around the preparation, compounding, and dispensing of medications under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. The role requires proficiency in all duties associated with a Certified Pharmacy Technician, including monitoring and managing medication diversion processes and implementing related mitigation activities. The technician will be responsible for maintaining comprehensive reporting capabilities from various computer systems related to medication diversion and safety, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws. Core responsibilities include medication accountability and diversion, where the technician will collect and review data from software applications, reconcile medication dispenses, and conduct audits. The technician will also be involved in IV admixture, demonstrating knowledge of aseptic techniques and preparing various types of admixtures, including small volume, specialty solutions, and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) when applicable. Safety and compliance are paramount, and the technician must adhere to all standards for compounding medications, ensuring that United States Pharmacopeia requirements are met. In terms of medication distribution, the technician will prepare medications for dispensing, manage bulk dispensing, and ensure secure transportation of medications to appropriate units. The role also includes responsibilities related to the Automatic Dispensing Cabinet (ADC), where the technician will manage user access, restock medications, and generate necessary reports. Miscellaneous activities include repackaging medications, providing customer service, processing orders, and coordinating training for new technicians. The technician must also perform inspections and monitor environmental conditions to ensure compliance with safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, compound, and dispense medications under the supervision of a pharmacist.

  • Conduct audits and resolve discrepancies in medication dispensing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic techniques and prepare various IV admixtures.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and compounding standards as per United States Pharmacopeia.
  • Prepare medications for dispensing, including bulk and single doses.
  • Manage the Automatic Dispensing Cabinet (ADC) including user access and inventory levels.
  • Provide customer service to healthcare professionals and patients.
  • Coordinate training for new pharmacy technicians.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Registered Pharmacy Technician license required.
  • Valid Pharmacy Technician Certification required.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience as an inventory specialist or in pharmacy automation.
  • Minimum of 2 years of hospital experience in pharmacy operations.
  • Excellent computer skills and communication skills required.
  • Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills required.
  • Mentoring skills and ability to lift a minimum of 30 pounds.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with automated dispensing cabinets.
  • Knowledge of Georgia Pharmacy law.
