About the position

The Pharmacy Technician at VIVO plays a crucial role in assisting the Registered Pharmacist with the preparation and dispensing of medications. This position involves a variety of responsibilities that ensure the efficient operation of the pharmacy and the safety of medication distribution. The Pharmacy Technician will assist in the non-professional aspects of preparing medications, which includes filling, packaging, labeling, and stocking medications. They will be responsible for accurately filling medication orders in the outpatient area and ensuring that all medications are labeled according to departmental specifications. Additionally, the technician will handle extemporaneous medication packaging as required, ensuring that all processes comply with established protocols. In addition to medication preparation, the Pharmacy Technician will assist in maintaining a variety of records and reports. This includes keeping accurate records for medications in the outpatient area, maintaining statistics for all medication orders, and entering orders into the computer system. The technician will also be responsible for maintaining sufficient inventory at workstations, which involves transporting pharmacy materials, receiving stock, and maintaining records for inventory control. They will ensure that there is a sufficient daily inventory of supplies to meet the needs of the pharmacy. Customer interaction is also a key component of this role. The Pharmacy Technician will operate the point-of-sale cash register system in accordance with department policies, ensuring a positive customer experience. They will interact with customers and healthcare providers to facilitate the filling of prescriptions, resolve any rejections, and obtain prior authorizations to expedite prescriptions into the workflow. Compliance with FDA mandates and manufacturer restrictions is essential, including adherence to Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) programs and limited distribution drug requirements. The Pharmacy Technician will perform related duties as required, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the pharmacy operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assists Registered Pharmacist in preparing and dispensing medication.
  • Fills, packages, labels, and stocks medications.
  • Fills medication orders in the outpatient area.
  • Responsible for extemporaneous medication packaging as required.
  • Maintains records for medication in the outpatient area.
  • Assists in the maintenance of statistics and records for all medication orders.
  • Enters orders into the computer system.
  • Maintains sufficient inventory at workstations in the pharmacy.
  • Transports required pharmacy material as necessary.
  • Receives and maintains records of stock and inventory control.
  • Operates point-of-sale cash register system according to department policies.
  • Interacts with customers and healthcare providers to facilitate the filling of prescriptions.
  • Handles and resolves rejections and obtains prior authorization for prescriptions.
  • Complies with FDA mandates and manufacturer restrictions on particular drugs.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of a recognized Pharmacy Technician Training Program or PTCB Certification (CPHT) required.
  • Current license as a registered pharmacy technician in NYS required when hired on/after 4/25/21.
  • Minimum of two (2) years related experience as a Pharmacy Technician including retail pharmacy with a computerized system within the last three (3) years required.
  • Ability to learn computerized retail pharmacy system.
  • Strong communications skills required.
