The Pharmacy Technician at RUSH Copley Medical Center plays a crucial role in supporting the pharmacy services under the technical direction of a registered pharmacist. This position involves a variety of clerical functions and duties that are essential for the distribution of medications and the overall functioning of the pharmacy. The technician is responsible for ensuring that all medication orders are filled accurately and within the requested time frame, which includes preparing unit dose tablets, capsules, and oral liquids. Additionally, the technician prepares intravenous admixtures, including chemotherapy and hyperalimentation, while adhering to strict aseptic techniques to maintain safety and compliance with health regulations. In this role, the technician is also tasked with maintaining the IV cleanroom according to established policies and procedures. It is imperative that the technician ensures that each order is checked by a pharmacist before distribution, thereby upholding the highest standards of patient safety. The technician has the authority to transport medications throughout the organization, including off-campus locations, which requires a thorough understanding of medication handling and storage protocols. The position also involves managing Automated Dispensing Units (ADUs) by maintaining adequate stock levels to prevent shortages and ensuring that units are refilled accurately and within the assigned time frame. The technician must follow through on any discrepancies discovered in the ADUs, adhering to the pharmacy's policies and procedures. Proper labeling and documentation of medications are critical, as the technician must label all medications according to pharmacy policy, affix necessary cautionary statements, and maintain complete and accurate logs and records. Inventory management is another key responsibility, which includes checking expiration dates on supplies, rotating stock, and disposing of outdated items according to pharmacy guidelines. The technician is also responsible for reordering medications and supplies to prevent shortages while avoiding overstocking. Operating pharmacy equipment according to manufacturer specifications and notifying the manager of any needed repairs is essential to prevent equipment damage and ensure smooth operations. Support functions include reviewing Automated Dispensing Cabinet Profile Override Reports and obtaining active physician orders, as well as reviewing discrepancy reports for accuracy. The technician prepares controlled substance records in compliance with regulations and maintains departmental records in an orderly manner for quick retrieval. Excellent communication skills are necessary, as the technician is expected to answer phone inquiries promptly and courteously, contributing to a positive experience for patients and healthcare staff alike.
