The incumbent is responsible for technical, clerical, and transportation duties for the department and is involved with the preparation, distribution, and delivery of medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The technician must demonstrate competency in patient care for neonate, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. Other duties within the scope of practice as assigned by the supervising pharmacist. The technician may be required to work at another GSSA facility. This position requires registration with the California State Board of Pharmacy as a registered technician. The requirements of the position also include: legal restrictions on the activities of non-licensed personnel in a pharmacy; medical abbreviations; pharmaceutical terminology and calculations; safe handling of antineoplastic/chemotherapeutic agents and aseptic technique in the preparation of intravenous admixtures and total parenteral nutrition. Special skills required for the position include: the ability to load automated dispensing machines; demonstrate accurate computer data entry skills and proper safety practices and techniques. The incumbent shall demonstrate behaviors consistent with the core (Mercy) values in support of Mercy General Hospital and the Mission and Philosophy of Dignity Health.

Responsibilities

  • Perform technical, clerical, and transportation duties for the pharmacy department.
  • Prepare, distribute, and deliver medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
  • Demonstrate competency in patient care for neonate, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Load automated dispensing machines and ensure accurate computer data entry.
  • Handle antineoplastic/chemotherapeutic agents and prepare intravenous admixtures and total parenteral nutrition as required.
  • Work at another GSSA facility if needed.

Requirements

  • One year of acute care hospital pharmacy practice experience or a 6-week pharmacy technician externship at the hiring facility.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legal restrictions on the activities of non-licensed personnel in a hospital pharmacy.
  • Knowledge of medical abbreviations, pharmaceutical terminology, calculations, and generic/trade names of medications.
  • Experience in the preparation of intravenous admixtures and antineoplastic/chemotherapeutic/hazardous medications.
  • Registration with the California State Board of Pharmacy as a registered technician.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of an ASHP accredited Pharmacy Technician program is preferred.
  • Experience working in a USP 797 clean room is preferable.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
