About the position

The Pharmacy Technician at Wheeling Hospital, Inc. plays a crucial role in the medication distribution process, assisting pharmacists in various tasks that do not require professional judgment. This position is designed for individuals who are committed to providing quality pharmaceutical care under the supervision of licensed pharmacists. The technician will be responsible for preparing unit-dose medications, delivering medications, and managing drug supplies effectively. The role requires adherence to standard procedures and guidelines to ensure patient safety and compliance with pharmacy regulations. In this position, the technician will read physician orders and prescriptions, preparing medications for dispensing, including specialized dosage forms for pediatric and geriatric patients. A solid understanding of pharmaceutical and medical terminology is essential, as the technician will communicate with patients and caregivers to ascertain medication needs and coordinate the delivery or pickup of medications. The technician will also be responsible for accurately preparing and delivering controlled substances, maintaining necessary records, and taking inventory of medication supplies to ensure that outdated or depleted medications are replaced promptly. The technician will perform arithmetic calculations necessary for dosage determinations and will be expected to work efficiently in accordance with departmental standards for speed and accuracy. This role is vital in ensuring that patients receive their medications safely and on time, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the pharmacy department.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare unit-dose medications and deliver medications to patients.
  • Order and deliver drug supplies as needed.
  • Read physician orders and prepare medications for dispensing, including unique dosage forms for pediatric and geriatric patients.
  • Communicate with patients or caregivers to determine medication needs and schedule delivery or pickup.
  • Accurately prepare and deliver controlled substances, maintaining all necessary records.
  • Take inventory of medication supplies and replace outdated or deteriorated medications.
  • Prepare non-parenteral medications, including oral solutions and suspensions for pediatric patients.
  • Label parenteral and prescription products appropriately.
  • Perform arithmetic calculations for dosage determinations required in medication preparation.
  • Adhere to departmental standards for speed and accuracy in all tasks.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must be nationally certified within 15 months of hire by completing an approved national certification exam (PTCB or EXCPT).
  • Must be registered with the applicable state Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician trainee upon hire (except PA).
  • If employed in Maryland, national certifications are waived.
  • Preferred: Associate's degree or post high school education in a science field or graduate of a pharmacy technician training program.
  • Preferred: Six months of pharmacy technician experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a pharmacy setting is preferred.
  • Completion of a pharmacy technician training program is preferred.
