The pharmacy technician role is essential in supporting the pharmacy department by assisting pharmacists in various tasks, including the compounding and dispensing of medications, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. This position requires a commitment to patient confidentiality and adherence to HIPAA guidelines, as well as a professional demeanor when interacting with patients and hospital staff. The pharmacy technician will perform a variety of essential duties, including preparing and distributing unit-dose medications, maintaining inventory, and assisting in the preparation of sterile intravenous solutions under the supervision of a pharmacist. The role also involves clerical tasks such as maintaining prescription files, answering phone calls, and processing billing charges. The technician will be responsible for ensuring that the pharmacy department remains organized and that all equipment is clean and functional. This position is vital for the smooth operation of the pharmacy and contributes significantly to the overall quality of care provided to patients at CHI Health St. Mary's.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and perform a variety of supporting tasks under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Prepare, fill, and distribute unit-dose medication.
  • Maintain professional attitude with patients, visitors, and other hospital personnel while assuring confidentiality of patient information.
  • Comply with all HIPAA procedures.
  • Perform clerical functions such as maintaining prescription files and answering the telephone.
  • Complete daily charges/credits for billing.
  • Fill and price department drug stock-supply requisitions.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the pharmacy work areas and equipment.
  • Perform inspections of the pharmacy inventory to remove expired or unusable drugs.
  • Assist in the preparation of sterile intravenous medications under pharmacist supervision.
  • Maintain adequate levels of stock drugs in the Automated Dispensing System on nursing units.
  • Check for discontinued IV admixture solutions and return unused medications to the pharmacy.
  • Repackage and label bulk oral solid and liquid drugs into unit-dose form under pharmacist supervision.
  • Resupply emergency drugs to crash carts and heart carts under pharmacist supervision.
  • Retrieve prescriptions from patients and perform data and prescription entry.
  • Fill prescriptions and provide general customer service, including resolving insurance problems.
  • Work the cash register and make entries in the medical record as authorized.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must be registered by the State of Nebraska as a Pharmacy Technician upon hire and as a certified pharmacy technician.
  • If registered as a Pharmacy Technician as of January 1, 2016, certification is required upon hire.
  • If registered after January 1, 2016, certification must be completed within one year from the registration date.
  • In Iowa, technicians must register with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy as either a certified pharmacy technician or technician trainee prior to working in the secured pharmacy area, with certification completed within one year of hire.
  • National pharmacy technician certification is required in Iowa.
