About the position

The Pharmacy Technician at the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS) specializes in automation and plays a crucial role in advancing the pharmacy profession. This position involves training staff, coordinating workflow, and ensuring the efficient operation of automated dispensing systems within the pharmacy. The technician will also be responsible for troubleshooting issues, maintaining compliance with policies, and managing the technical aspects of drug distribution activities.

Responsibilities

  • Train and orient new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate, analyze, and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area of the pharmacy.
  • Coordinate the technical aspects of pharmacy drug distribution activities to ensure standard operating procedures align with automation capabilities.
  • Recommend changes for the improvement of workflow, work methods, and priorities within the drug distribution system.
  • Troubleshoot problems with automated dispensing equipment and alert appropriate personnel when production is compromised.
  • Ensure automated dispensing data is archived within established guidelines for each type of equipment.
  • Participate in process action teams to improve automation quality and safety.
  • Provide data for workload reports and process improvement projects to appropriate supervisors.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Certification as a Pharmacy Technician through PTCB or NHA is required for positions above GS-06 level.
  • One year of experience equivalent to GS-07 level in pharmacy operations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with sterile compounding and controlled substances.
  • Knowledge of VA Pharmacy procurement and formulary.
