About the position

The Pharmacy Technician (Controlled Substance) position at the Department of Veterans Affairs is responsible for managing and overseeing all controlled substances handled by the pharmacy at the White City VA SORCC. This role is critical due to the sensitive nature of controlled substances, requiring a thorough understanding of federal, VA, and facility regulations. The technician will prepare, fill, and dispense medications, conduct inventories, assist in compliance inspections, and maintain accurate inventory records while ensuring adherence to all relevant policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, fill, and dispense controlled substances according to policies and procedures.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled inventories every 72 hours and daily if needed according to regulations and policies.
  • Assist the Controlled Substance Compliance Inspectors to complete monthly inspections.
  • Coordinate, manage, complete, and document the purchasing of all prescription and non-prescription drug products and supplies.
  • Maintain, verify, stock, and replace outdated controlled substances from stock, including inpatient wards and storage cabinets.
  • Maintain accurate electronic inventory through decrementing prescriptions and entering received inventory.
  • Follow policies for handling the destruction and return of controlled substances.
  • Work with pharmacy procurement personnel to provide information regarding medications and supplies needed.
  • Assist, review, and make recommendations in inventory control of controlled substances.
  • Monitor and analyze orders and usage patterns for unusual trends.
  • Communicate potential problems to the Supervisory Pharmacy Technician and/or Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations.
  • Provide training for pharmacists, interns, technicians, inspectors, and students in controlled substance accountability procedures.
  • Prepare, operate, restock, and maintain automated dispensing cabinets and necessary equipment.
  • Resolve inventory discrepancies immediately and report them to the pharmacy supervisor.
  • Ensure compliance with local requirements, VISN, OIG, VHA handbook expectations, and DEA requirements.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • Must pass a urinalysis drug test prior to appointment.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Completion of an online onboarding process is required.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is mandatory.
  • Participation in the COVID-19 vaccination program is required.
