About the position

The position of Pharmacy Technician at Kaiser Permanente involves performing a variety of clerical and technical duties under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The role is essential in maintaining pharmacy services in accordance with departmental policies, standards, and state regulations. The Pharmacy Technician will work closely with center administration to ensure the effective delivery of pharmacy services, contributing to the overall patient care experience. In this role, the Pharmacy Technician will be responsible for a range of general clerical duties, which include operating the cash register, handling cash, verifying member eligibility, bookkeeping, filing, and maintaining general supply inventory. Additionally, under the guidance of a Registered Pharmacist, the technician will perform technical tasks such as entering prescription and allergy data into the computer system, typing prescription labels, retrieving medications from shelves, counting and packaging medications, and labeling them appropriately. The technician will also manage refill requests and assist with inventory control, purchasing, and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the pharmacy. Customer service is a key component of this position, as the Pharmacy Technician will serve members in a friendly and efficient manner, promoting member satisfaction and retention. Collaboration with medical records and nursing staff is also crucial, as the technician will collect and disseminate prescription-related information, including advice slips and refill requests. The role may involve orienting and instructing new pharmacy personnel on departmental policies and procedures, as well as participating in patient education programs as needed. The Pharmacy Technician may also have specific responsibilities related to clinical pharmacy services, such as enrolling patients in services, communicating with patients and practitioners, retrieving laboratory data, processing reports, collecting data for quality improvement projects, and managing administrative office activities. Continuous professional development is encouraged, and attendance at pharmacy education or training programs is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general clerical duties including cash register operation, cash handling, member eligibility verification, bookkeeping, filing, and general supply maintenance.
  • Under supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, perform technical duties including entering prescription and allergy data into the computer, typing prescription labels, retrieving medication from shelves, counting and packaging medication, and labeling medication.
  • Assist with inventory control, purchasing, pharmaceutical returns, return-to-stock, shelf cleanliness, product rotation, and maintenance.
  • Serve members in a friendly, courteous, and expedient manner to promote member satisfaction and retention.
  • Work in conjunction with medical records and nursing staff to collect and disseminate prescription-related information.
  • Orient and instruct new pharmacy personnel regarding department policies and procedures under supervisor's direction.
  • Participate in patient education programs as appropriate.
  • May have specific clinical pharmacy service responsibilities such as patient enrollment, telecommunication to patients and practitioners, written patient communication, laboratory data retrieval, processing reports, collecting data for quality improvement projects, and handling administrative office activities.
  • Attend pharmacy education or training programs as appropriate.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
  • Pharmacy Technician License (Georgia) required.
  • Ability to deal pleasantly and effectively with medical staff and patients.
  • Knowledge of basic cash register operations and cash control systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret written prescriptions.
  • Ability to work in a repetitive environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • One (1) year of experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital or retail setting preferred.
  • One (1) year of experience as a Pharmacy Assistant in a Kaiser Permanente Pharmacy preferred.
