Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician I performs pharmacy-related functions in compliance with the department's policies and procedures to provide optimal pharmaceutical care. This entry-level role typically requires little to no prior knowledge or experience, and work is routine or follows standard procedures, closely supervised, and involves communicating information that requires little explanation or interpretation. The Pharmacy Technician Trainee performs minimal, routine tasks in preparation for becoming a Pharmacy Technician. The Pharmacy Technician I is responsible for assisting in the preparation and dispensing of medications and mixtures according to established policies and procedures. This includes picking medications for automated dispensing cabinet replenishment, accurately preparing sterile products, filling floor stock remote orders, and maintaining storeroom areas. The technician will also manage emergency medication inventory, restock medications, and ensure that all assigned work is completed accurately by the end of each shift. The role requires effective communication with nursing, physicians, and ancillary services to meet departmental needs and maintain a positive working relationship. Physical requirements include the ability to walk and stand for 90% of the day, occasionally lift up to 30 lbs, and perform tasks that require manual dexterity. The technician must also be organized, systematic, and possess excellent telephone etiquette skills. Knowledge of hazardous substance handling, complex sterile compounding techniques, and extensive knowledge of medications is essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the preparation and dispensing of medications and mixtures according to Policies and Procedures.
  • Picks medications for automated dispensing cabinet replenishment accurately and with reasonable speed.
  • Accurately and aseptically prepares sterile products utilizing proper technique.
  • Fills floor stock remote orders accurately as determined by pharmacist check.
  • Maintains storeroom areas assuring that supplies in short supply are ordered and that outdated medication is removed from stock immediately.
  • Restocks medications into automated dispensing cabinets in appropriate patient care areas accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Manages emergency medication inventory in carts/kits, including ordering and maintaining adequate supply.
  • Maintains medication rooms by ensuring all appropriate medications are stocked in patient specific bins.
  • Empties return bins in the automated dispensing cabinets as part of the weekly schedule.
  • Utilizes the unit-dose machine to package bulk medications and appropriately compounds non-sterile medications following standard formulas and procedures.
  • Performs assigned cycle counts of the carousel on a regular basis, maintaining adequate records of completion.
  • Assists in keeping the Pharmacy neat and clean by caring for equipment and cleaning after compounding prescriptions.
  • Conducts temperature inspections of the refrigerator in the automated dispensing machine.
  • Inspects assigned medication storage areas monthly maintaining adequate records of inspection.
  • Greets and assists customers upon arrival to the pharmacy and participates in point of sale cash transactions.
  • Provides customer or patient assistance over the phone and triages calls as appropriate.
  • Completes all assigned work accurately by the end of each shift and all necessary quality control paperwork.
  • Communicates effectively with nursing, physicians, and ancillary services to meet the needs of these departments.
  • Maintains collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Massachusetts Pharmacy Technician Registration.

Nice-to-haves

  • One (1) year of pharmacy-related experience.
