About the position

The Cincinnati VA Medical Center is seeking a Pharmacy Technician specializing in automation to support both inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services. This role focuses on coordinating the technical aspects of pharmacy drug distribution, ensuring that automation capabilities align with standard operating procedures to maximize efficiency. The technician will also be responsible for troubleshooting automation issues, training staff, and maintaining compliance with pharmacy policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the technical aspects of pharmacy drug distribution activities to ensure alignment with automation capabilities.
  • Evaluate and analyze workflow and coordinate all work activities involved with pharmacy automation.
  • Ensure that automated dispensing data is archived within established guidelines for each type of equipment.
  • Participate in process action teams to improve automation quality and safety.
  • Resolve problems and complaints regarding pharmacy and automated dispensing automation.
  • Oversee user files of all automated dispensing systems and manage the addition or deletion of items from these systems.
  • Ensure equipment is cleaned and maintained in a timely manner as recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Train and orient pharmacy staff and other medical center staff involved in operating the automation.
  • Provide data for workload reports and process improvement projects to appropriate supervisors.
  • Understand VA Pharmacy procurement and formulary to manage pharmacy automation equipment effectively.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
  • Must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either PTCB or NHA for positions above the full performance level.
  • One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-7) is required for GS-8 positions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of pharmacy concepts, principles, and policies, particularly in automation.

  • Experience in training and orienting new pharmacy staff.
  • Ability to evaluate, analyze, and coordinate workflow within a pharmacy setting.
