About the position

The Pharmacy Technician (Inpatient) at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is responsible for receiving and reviewing prescriptions, preparing medications, and ensuring compliance with pharmacy standards. This role involves working closely with pharmacists and healthcare staff to provide safe and effective pharmaceutical care to patients, particularly in critical care settings. The technician will also assist in educating staff on medication storage and safety protocols, while maintaining accurate records and inventory of pharmaceuticals.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and reviews prescriptions for pharmaceuticals, including controlled drugs, ensuring compliance with pharmacy SOPs.
  • Enters prescriptions into the outpatient computer system, checking for allergies and drug interactions.
  • Coordinates with prescribers or pharmacists to clarify issues with dosing or instructions.
  • Performs outpatient functions with minimal supervision from a registered pharmacist.
  • Enters and retrieves patient-specific information from pharmacy-oriented computer systems.
  • Assists with drug utilization review studies and prepares sterile products for critically ill patients.
  • Prepares specialized parenteral medications for surgeries and critical care.
  • Maintains records on investigational drug protocols in support of research.
  • Conducts inspections of medication storage areas and educates staff on proper storage and security of pharmaceuticals.
  • Reviews stock levels to ensure adequate supply of critical care items and provides technical guidance to other pharmacy technicians.
  • Processes orders for controlled substances, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulations.
  • Interprets physicians' orders and dispenses prescriptions according to pharmacy policies.
  • Prepares intravenous additive solutions using sterile techniques.
  • Assembles drugs and supplies for distribution to the Primary Care Center.
  • Answers questions regarding medication administration and drug interactions.
  • Maintains adequate stock levels and advises on shortages of medications or supplies.
  • Checks drug supplies for expiration and proper maintenance.
  • Maintains records for narcotic and controlled substances issuance and receipt.
  • Implements departmental policies and participates in quality assurance activities.
  • Assists pharmacists in training pharmacy technician students and inexperienced technicians.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years as a Pharmacy Technician post-graduation.
  • Graduate of an ASHP-accredited Pharmacy Technician program or a formal pharmacy technician training program.
  • Valid, unrestricted Pharmacy Technician license in at least one U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
