About the position

As a Walgreens Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Apprentice, you will play a crucial role in transforming the pharmacy experience from a transaction-based environment to a patient-centric one. This apprenticeship program serves as an entry point into the healthcare field, guiding you towards becoming a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certified Pharmacy Technician. You will gain the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the pharmacy care industry, ultimately earning a nationally recognized credential that enhances your career prospects. In this role, you will assist the pharmacist under direct supervision, performing various pharmacy department duties in compliance with company policies and state and federal regulations. Your responsibilities will include using pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information, processing prescriptions, and coaching other pharmacy technicians if you are PTCB certified. You will also be responsible for delivering a distinctive customer experience by engaging with customers, resolving issues, and modeling best practices in customer service. Your ability to develop strong relationships with customers will be key to your success in this position. Operationally, you will assist in the practice of pharmacy by entering patient and drug information accurately, filling prescriptions, and ensuring compliance with the Walgreen Co. Pharmacy Code of Conduct. You will report any prescription errors to the pharmacist and adhere to company policies regarding quality improvement. Additionally, you will handle cash transactions, assist with inventory management, and support the pharmacy department in maintaining a clean and orderly environment. Your role may also involve assisting in clinical services, such as collecting and labeling samples, and fostering relationships with local healthcare providers. Training and personal development are integral to this position. You will be expected to earn and maintain PTCB certification and participate in ongoing training and education to stay current in the healthcare and pharmacy fields. Through the Walgreens pharmacy technician apprenticeship program, you will also earn college credit hours recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE), further enhancing your educational credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the pharmacist in the practice of pharmacy under direct supervision.
  • Use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions.
  • Engage customers and patients by greeting them and offering assistance with products and services.
  • Model and share customer service best practices with team members.
  • Enter patient and drug information accurately into pharmacy systems.
  • Fill prescriptions by retrieving, counting, and pouring pharmaceutical drugs.
  • Verify the correctness of medications and check for possible interactions.
  • Report prescription errors to the pharmacist immediately.
  • Register all related sales on the assigned cash register and handle cash as required.
  • Assist in inventory management activities, including ordering and unpacking pharmaceuticals.
  • Assist pharmacists in administering clinical services, including collecting and labeling samples.
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with the local medical community.
  • Ensure the Pharmacy Department is stocked, clean, and orderly.
  • Complete special assignments and other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Must be able to assist the pharmacist in the practice of pharmacy under direct supervision.
  • Must be able to use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prefer six months of experience in a retail environment.
  • Prefer prior work experience with Walgreens.
  • Prefer good math skills for accurately filling prescriptions.
  • Prefer good computer skills.
  • Prefer knowledge of store inventory control.
