About the position

As a Walgreens Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Apprentice, you will play a crucial role in transforming the pharmacy experience from a transaction-based environment to a patient-centric one. This apprenticeship program serves as an entry point into the healthcare field, guiding you towards becoming a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certified Pharmacy Technician. You will gain the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the pharmacy care industry, ultimately earning a nationally recognized credential that enhances your career prospects. In this role, you will assist the pharmacist under direct supervision, performing various pharmacy department duties in compliance with company policies and state and federal regulations. Your responsibilities will include using pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information, processing prescriptions, and coaching pharmacy technicians in the operation of pharmacy systems. You will also be responsible for delivering a distinctive customer experience by engaging with customers, resolving issues, and modeling best practices in customer service. Your ability to develop strong relationships with customers will be key to your success in this position. Additionally, you will assist in the operational aspects of the pharmacy, including entering patient and drug information, filling prescriptions, and maintaining workflow. You will be accountable for registering sales on the cash register and handling cash transactions. Your role may also involve assisting with inventory management, clinical services, and maintaining a clean and orderly pharmacy environment. Continuous training and personal development are integral to this position, as you will be expected to earn and maintain your PTCB certification and stay updated on the latest developments in healthcare and pharmacy.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the pharmacist in the practice of pharmacy under direct supervision.
  • Use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions.
  • Engage customers and patients by greeting them and offering assistance with products and services.
  • Resolve customer issues and answer questions to ensure a positive customer experience.
  • Assist in scheduling and maintaining workflow in the pharmacy.
  • Fill prescriptions by retrieving, counting, and pouring pharmaceutical drugs.
  • Report prescription errors to the pharmacist on duty immediately.
  • Register all related sales on the assigned cash register and handle cash as required.
  • Assist with inventory management activities, such as ordering and unpacking pharmaceuticals.
  • Assist the pharmacist in administering clinical services, including collecting and labeling blood/urine samples.

Requirements

  • Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Must be able to earn and maintain PTCB certification through the designated training program or state-required certification/registration.
  • Prefer six months of experience in a retail environment.
  • Prefer good math skills for accurately filling prescriptions.
  • Prefer good computer skills and knowledge of store inventory control.

  • Prior work experience with Walgreens is preferred.
  • Knowledge of store inventory control is preferred.
  • PTCB certification is preferred.
