About the position

As a Walgreens Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Apprentice, you will play a crucial role in transforming the pharmacy experience from a transaction-based environment to a more patient-centric one. You will gain the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the pharmacy care industry, ultimately earning a nationally recognized credential that enhances your career prospects. In this role, you will assist the pharmacist under direct supervision, performing various pharmacy department duties in compliance with company policies and state and federal regulations. Your responsibilities will include using pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information, processing prescriptions, and coaching other pharmacy technicians if you are PTCB certified. You will also be responsible for delivering a distinctive customer experience by engaging with customers, resolving issues, and modeling best practices in customer service. This position requires you to develop strong relationships with valuable customers and ensure that their needs are met effectively. Operationally, you will assist in the practice of pharmacy by entering patient and drug information accurately, filling prescriptions, and checking for potential drug interactions. You will report any prescription errors to the pharmacist and adhere strictly to company policies regarding dispensing activities. Additionally, you will handle cash transactions, assist with inventory management, and support the pharmacy department in maintaining a clean and orderly environment. Your role may also involve assisting in clinical services, such as collecting and labeling samples, and fostering relationships with local healthcare providers to enhance growth opportunities for the pharmacy. To succeed in this position, you will need to earn and maintain your PTCB certification and participate in ongoing training and education. The Walgreens pharmacy technician apprenticeship program qualifies for eight college credit hours, providing you with valuable educational recognition as you advance in your career.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the pharmacist in the practice of pharmacy under direct supervision.
  • Use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions.
  • Engage customers and patients by greeting them and offering assistance with products and services.
  • Model and share customer service best practices with team members.
  • Fill prescriptions by retrieving, counting, and pouring pharmaceutical drugs, verifying medicine is correct, and checking for possible interactions.
  • Report prescription errors to the pharmacist on duty and adhere to company policies regarding pharmacy errors.
  • Register all related sales on assigned cash register and handle cash as required.
  • Assist in inventory management activities, such as ordering, unpacking, checking, and storing shipments of pharmaceuticals.
  • Assist the pharmacist in administering clinical services, including the collection and proper labeling of blood/urine samples from patients.
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with the local medical community.

Requirements

  • Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Ability to assist in the practice of pharmacy in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Basic math skills to fill prescriptions accurately, including counting, measuring, and weighing medications.
  • Good computer skills for operating pharmacy systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Six months of experience in a retail environment.
  • Prior work experience with Walgreens.
  • Knowledge of store inventory control.
  • PTCB certification.
