About the position

As a Walgreens Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Apprentice, you will play a crucial role in transforming the pharmacy experience from a transaction-based environment to a more patient-centric one. This apprenticeship program serves as an entry point into the healthcare field, guiding you towards becoming a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certified Pharmacy Technician. You will gain the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the pharmacy care industry, ultimately earning a nationally recognized credential that enhances your career prospects. In this role, you will assist the pharmacist under direct supervision, performing various pharmacy department duties in compliance with company policies and state and federal regulations. Your responsibilities will include using pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information, processing prescriptions, and coaching other pharmacy technicians if you are PTCB certified. You will also be responsible for delivering a distinctive customer experience by engaging with customers, resolving issues, and modeling best practices in customer service. This position requires you to develop strong relationships with customers, ensuring their needs are met and their experiences are positive. Operationally, you will assist in the pharmacy's daily functions, including entering patient and drug information, filling prescriptions, and maintaining workflow. You will report any prescription errors to the pharmacist and adhere to company policies regarding Good Faith Dispensing. Additionally, you will handle cash transactions, assist customers in locating products, and manage telephone calls that do not require the pharmacist's attention. Your role may also involve inventory management activities, assisting in the administration of clinical services, and maintaining good relationships with local healthcare providers. Training and personal development are key components of this position, as you will be expected to earn and maintain your PTCB certification and participate in ongoing education to stay current in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the pharmacist in the practice of pharmacy under direct supervision.
  • Use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions.
  • Engage customers and patients by greeting them and offering assistance with products and services.
  • Model and share customer service best practices with team members.
  • Assist in filling prescriptions by retrieving, counting, and pouring pharmaceutical drugs.
  • Report prescription errors to the pharmacist on duty immediately.
  • Register all related sales on the assigned cash register and handle cash as required.
  • Process manual claims for third-party program prescription services in a timely manner.
  • Assist in inventory management activities, including ordering and unpacking pharmaceuticals.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly pharmacy department.

Requirements

  • Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Ability to assist the pharmacist in various pharmacy duties.
  • Basic computer skills to operate pharmacy systems.
  • Good math skills for accurately filling prescriptions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Six months of experience in a retail environment.
  • Prior work experience with Walgreens.
  • Knowledge of store inventory control.
  • PTCB certification.
