About the position

As a Walgreens Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Apprentice, you will play a crucial role in transforming the pharmacy experience from a transaction-based environment to a patient-centric one. This position places you at the forefront of customer interaction, allowing you to develop strong relationships with patients while providing essential pharmacy services. Walgreens is committed to investing in your career through its "earn while you learn" Pharmacy Technician Training Program, which is recognized by the ASHP and the Department of Labor. This apprenticeship program serves as an entry point into the healthcare field, guiding you towards becoming a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certified Pharmacy Technician. You will receive comprehensive training that equips you with the foundational and advanced knowledge necessary to excel in the pharmacy care industry. In your role, you will assist the pharmacist under direct supervision, performing various pharmacy department duties in accordance with company policies and procedures. This includes using pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information, processing prescriptions, and coaching other pharmacy technicians if you are PTCB certified. You will also be responsible for delivering a distinctive customer experience by engaging with customers, resolving issues, and ensuring satisfaction. Your operational duties will involve entering patient and drug information accurately, filling prescriptions, and maintaining compliance with pharmacy regulations. Additionally, you will assist in inventory management, handle cash transactions, and support the pharmacy team in clinical services. Building and maintaining relationships with local healthcare providers will also be part of your responsibilities. The position requires a commitment to ongoing training and personal development, including earning and maintaining PTCB certification and completing continuing education credits. Through the Walgreens pharmacy technician apprenticeship program, you can earn up to eight college credit hours recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE).

Responsibilities

  • Assist the pharmacist in the practice of pharmacy under direct supervision.
  • Use pharmacy systems to obtain patient and drug information and process prescriptions.
  • Engage customers and patients by greeting them and offering assistance with products and services.
  • Resolve customer issues and answer questions to ensure a positive customer experience.
  • Assist in filling prescriptions by retrieving, counting, and pouring pharmaceutical drugs.
  • Verify that the medicine is correct and check for possible interactions.
  • Register all related sales on the assigned cash register and handle cash as required.
  • Assist in scheduling and maintaining workflow in the pharmacy.
  • Process manual claims for third-party program prescription services in a timely manner.
  • Support pharmacy department on inventory management activities, such as ordering and unpacking pharmaceuticals.
  • Assist in administering clinical services, including the collection and proper labeling of blood/urine samples from patients.
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with local medical community members, including physicians and nurses.
  • Ensure the Pharmacy Department is stocked with adequate supplies and is clean and orderly.

Requirements

  • Must be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Ability to assist the pharmacist in various pharmacy duties.
  • Experience in a retail environment is preferred, ideally six months.
  • Good math skills for accurately filling prescriptions, including counting, measuring, and weighing medications.
  • Basic computer skills and knowledge of store inventory control are preferred.
  • PTCB certification is preferred.

  • Prior work experience with Walgreens is preferred.
  • Good interpersonal skills to develop strong customer relationships.
  • Experience in customer service best practices.
