About the position

The position involves working closely with pharmacists to ensure the accurate and timely provision of medications to patients. The role encompasses a variety of responsibilities including filling new and refill orders, managing Omnicell refills, and preparing unit dose carts. Additionally, the technician will be involved in compounding medications as needed and must possess a solid understanding of pharmaceutical terms and calculations. The technician will also respond to inquiries and medication requests, ensuring that all issues are resolved efficiently. The role requires the ability to prepare sterile admixtures using aseptic techniques under the supervision of a pharmacist. This includes understanding and applying accepted protocols for aseptic technique, accurately calculating doses for IV parenteral products, and maintaining cleanliness in preparation areas. General pharmacy tasks related to medication control, delivery, and processing are also part of the job. This includes picking up and delivering medications, restocking supplies, and maintaining organized work areas. The technician will also be responsible for performing emergency cart restocking and managing controlled substances according to departmental protocols. The technician will perform floor stock duties, including monthly inspections and maintenance of medication storage areas, ensuring compliance with standard practice guidelines. Computer tasks are also a significant part of the role, requiring proficiency in generating labels, processing refills, and maintaining documentation for quality assurance. Ongoing education and licensure maintenance are essential components of the position, with participation in departmental meetings and educational programs expected.

Responsibilities

  • Works with pharmacist to provide accurate and timely medications to patients.
  • Fills new and refill orders.
  • Manages Omnicell refilling and loading.
  • Performs unit dose cart fills and exchanges.
  • Compounds medications as needed.
  • Understands pharmaceutical terms, abbreviations, and symbols used in prescriptions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of pharmaceutical balance and performs weight and volume calculations for compounded prescriptions.
  • Responds to phone inquiries and walk-up service requests, resolving issues or directing them appropriately.
  • Responds to medication requests, filling them and determining reasons for missing doses.

Requirements

  • Pharmacy Technician licensure is required.
  • Ability to prepare sterile admixtures using aseptic technique under supervision.
  • Demonstrates understanding of aseptic technique according to accepted protocols.
  • Calculates doses accurately for IV parenteral products.
  • Performs correct cleaning procedures for IV hood and aseptic preparation areas.
  • Maintains work areas in a clean and organized manner.
  • Participates in department and focus group meetings.
  • Completes competency requirements successfully.
