About the position

The Pharmacy Technician position at the Northern Arizona VA Healthcare System (NAVAHCS) is responsible for supporting patient care activities within Pharmacy Service. The role involves working autonomously to perform a full range of pharmacy technician duties, assisting pharmacists in providing optimal care and timely service in alignment with the healthcare system's mission and goals.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately interpret, fill, and prepare prescriptions for pharmacist verification.
  • Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly condition, ensuring all stock and equipment are in assigned places.
  • Store and secure drugs and supplies according to USP and VA guidelines.
  • Receive, check, rotate, and stock items from Pharmacy Procurement, reconciling discrepancies as needed.
  • Utilize automation dispensing equipment available to pharmacy staff.
  • Record expiration dates in the automatic prescription dispensing system upon receipt.
  • Perform monthly inspections to ensure proper storage of medications and remove soon-to-expire drugs.
  • Compound and/or reconstitute oral or external medications (non-sterile) for pharmacist verification.
  • Answer questions from pharmacy and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution.
  • Assist in training and orientation of new staff technicians, interns, and students.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives for pharmacy.
  • Complete all mandatory trainings in a timely manner.
  • Comply with all VHA, Medical Center, and Pharmacy Service regulations, directives, policies, and procedures.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification (PTCB or NHA).
  • One year of experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in pharmacy technician duties.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with sterile compounding and hazardous drugs.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy information systems and automated dispensing equipment.
