About the position

The Pharmacy Technician plays a crucial role in supporting the pharmacy operations within a correctional institution. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, the technician is responsible for performing technical support functions, ensuring the safe and effective distribution of medications, and maintaining the security of the institution. This position emphasizes the importance of public safety and the humane treatment of individuals preparing for reentry into society.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support functions in accordance with accepted policies and procedures under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Perform clerical duties and miscellaneous functions for the day-to-day operation of the pharmacy.
  • Execute established medication distribution functions daily according to pharmacy policy and procedures.
  • Administer prescribed medications via directly observed therapy as mandated by the Health Services Manual.
  • Prepare prescription labels and parenteral medications using aseptic techniques in the laminar flow hood.
  • Deliver interim doses to the floor and clean the IV hood, ensuring temperature requirements for medication storage are documented.
  • Prepare extemporaneous parenteral medications and maintain the security of the institution.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major in pharmacy or at least 24 semester hours in pharmacy-related courses.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service, typically gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or pharmaceutical firms.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature, characteristics, strengths, dosage forms, and systems of weights and measures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in correctional facility pharmacy operations.
  • Certification as a Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
  • Familiarity with aseptic/sterile techniques.
