About the position

The Pharmacy Technician position at the Department of Justice involves providing technical support functions under the supervision of a pharmacist. The role is crucial in ensuring the safe and effective distribution of medications within a correctional facility, contributing to public safety and the rehabilitation of individuals. The technician will perform various clerical and operational duties, maintain security protocols, and assist in medication administration as mandated by health services policies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support functions in accordance with accepted policies and procedures under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Perform clerical duties and miscellaneous functions for the day-to-day operation of the pharmacy.
  • Administer prescribed medications via directly observed therapy as mandated by the Health Services Manual.
  • Prepare prescription labels and parenteral medications using aseptic techniques in the laminar flow hood.
  • Deliver interim doses to the floor and ensure proper cleaning and temperature documentation for medication storage.
  • Maintain security of the institution as part of correctional responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study in pharmacy, or at least 24 semester hours in pharmacy-related courses.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service, typically gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or pharmaceutical firms.
  • Basic knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature, characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals, and procedures for care, storage, repackaging, and distribution of pharmaceuticals.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a correctional facility or similar environment.
  • Certification as a pharmacy technician.
