About the position

Newport Mental Health (NMH) is seeking a Philanthropy Grant Writer & Portfolio Manager to join our dynamic team. This role is pivotal in supporting our mission to improve the lives of individuals in Newport County through high-quality mental health care. The Philanthropy Grant Writer & Portfolio Manager will work under the supervision of the Vice President of Philanthropy and will be responsible for researching, coordinating, and writing federal and state grants, as well as large-scale foundation requests and high-level sponsorship proposals. This position will also oversee the entire grant cycle process, ensuring that all proposals are concise, compelling, and meet the requirements set forth by funders. The successful candidate will be instrumental in tracking and reporting on the impact of NMH's mission to our funders, thereby enhancing our ability to secure necessary funding for our programs. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in grant writing, with at least five years of experience in federal and state grant submissions, as well as a proven track record of success in securing funding. This role requires excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to tailor content to various audiences. The Philanthropy Grant Writer & Portfolio Manager will also be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including grant funders and corporate partners, to ensure ongoing support for NMH's initiatives. Additionally, the candidate will collaborate closely with internal department directors to understand their financial and programmatic needs, ensuring that all proposals align with NMH's strategic goals. In this position, you will be expected to manage a diverse portfolio of over 50 grants annually, personally overseeing the preparation and submission of approximately 20-25 grants each year. You will also be responsible for identifying new funding opportunities and communicating these potential sources internally. The role requires a proactive approach to grant writing, including thorough research and strategic oversight of NMH's grant portfolio. You will engage in productive conversations with various stakeholders, from executives to clinical staff, to foster a collaborative environment that supports our mission. This position is essential for driving the financial sustainability of Newport Mental Health and ensuring that we can continue to provide vital services to our community.

Responsibilities

  • Research, coordinate, and write federal/state grants, large-scale foundation requests, and high-level sponsorship proposals.
  • Track and report on the impact of Newport Mental Health's mission to funders.
  • Oversee the entire grant cycle process, ensuring proposals are concise and compelling.
  • Build relationships with key stakeholders to increase overall grant and sponsorship revenues.
  • Prepare compelling grant proposals by determining program needs and collecting necessary information.
  • Identify and develop funding sources to support existing and planned program activities.
  • Provide support and follow up with funding agencies regarding NMH's mission and services.
  • Manage NMH's grant portfolio of 50+ grants each year, delegating workload among the grant writing team.
  • Personally manage the preparation, submission, and reporting of approximately 20-25 grants each year.
  • Cultivate strong interpersonal relationships with grant funders and corporate partners.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in federal/state grant writing with a successful track record.
  • Experience with nonprofit grant writing and/or corporate giving programs is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a flexible writing style.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively under tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to cultivate relationships with donors and coworkers.
  • General experience with fundraising/development or event planning is a welcome bonus.
  • Knowledge of healthcare or associated industries is appreciated.
