About the position

As a Phlebotomist in our 24-hour outpatient department, you will play a crucial role in transforming our patients' lives through your expertise in specimen collection and management. Your primary responsibility will be to perform proper specimen collection from patients of all age groups, ensuring accurate identification and labeling of specimens to guarantee reliable patient results. You will demonstrate proper techniques, including selecting the appropriate equipment, verifying orders, and following standard precautions during the collection process. Additionally, you will maintain current knowledge of various collection methods and explain protocols to patients, nurses, and physicians as needed. In this role, you will also be responsible for managing specimen accessioning accurately and efficiently, prioritizing specimens as they arrive in the lab, and ensuring quality specimens for laboratory testing. You will handle clerical duties, including accurate specimen accessioning and entering billing and registration information. Your ability to provide excellent customer service by answering technical questions and directing others to appropriate resources will be essential. You will work independently with minimal supervision while also assisting colleagues when your workload allows. Responsibilities

  • Perform proper specimen collection from patients of all age groups by confirming patient ID and utilizing venipuncture/capillary techniques.
  • Demonstrate proper technique to provide standard of care, including selecting appropriate equipment and following standard precautions.
  • Maintain current knowledge of methods for blood, urine, stool, fluid, and culture collections, explaining protocols to patients, nurses, and physicians as required.
  • Participate in annual skills review by reviewing age-appropriate competencies and receiving evaluation of technique by direct observation.
  • Compare specimen label and/or requisition to patient ID band prior to collection and properly label specimens after collection.
  • Use handheld device on all inpatients and verbally confirm 2 patient identifiers with all outpatients prior to collection and after collection.
  • Complete specimen collection in a timely manner without affecting quality or integrity of sample, demonstrating organizational skills by prioritizing collection requests.
  • Manage specimen accessioning accurately and efficiently to provide quality specimens for laboratory testing, prioritizing Stats, Routine, and blue bag specimens as they arrive in the lab.
  • Provide customer service by answering broad technical questions and directing others to appropriate resources, performing clerical duties accurately and efficiently.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of Phlebotomy training.
  • H.S. diploma or equivalent.
  • Familiar with computer, office equipment, organizational and team skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • 40 hours of internship.
  • Previous 1 year Phlebotomy experience.
  • Completion of a Phlebotomy certification class or accredited course, or military trained, or on-the-job training.
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Systems.
