About the position

As a Phlebotomist, you will play a crucial role in the healthcare team by performing proper specimen collection from patients of all age groups. This involves confirming patient identification, collecting specimens using venipuncture and capillary techniques, and accurately labeling specimens to ensure precise patient results. You will demonstrate proper techniques to provide a standard of care, which includes selecting the appropriate equipment prior to collection, verifying orders, and ensuring proper patient preparation. You will also maintain current knowledge of various specimen collection methods and explain protocols to patients, nurses, and physicians as required. In this role, you will be responsible for performing phlebotomy duties accurately and efficiently, completing specimen collections in a timely manner without compromising the quality or integrity of samples. You will demonstrate organizational skills by prioritizing collection requests and reconciling pending lists while processing STAT specimens. Additionally, you will manage specimen accessioning accurately to provide quality specimens for laboratory testing, ensuring that all specimens are handled according to established policies and procedures. Customer service is also a key component of this position, as you will be expected to answer technical questions and direct others to appropriate resources. You will perform clerical duties related to specimen accessioning and demonstrate clear verbal and written communication skills. This position requires a commitment to maintaining high standards of care and efficiency in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform proper specimen collection from patients of all age groups by confirming patient ID and utilizing venipuncture/capillary techniques.
  • Demonstrate proper technique to provide standard of care, including selecting appropriate equipment and following standard precautions.
  • Maintain current knowledge of methods for blood, urine, stool, fluid, and culture collections and explain protocols to patients, nurses, and physicians.
  • Participate in annual skills review and receive evaluation of technique by direct observation.
  • Compare specimen label and/or requisition to patient ID band prior to collection and properly label specimens after collection.
  • Use handheld device on all inpatients and verbally confirm 2 patient identifiers with all outpatients prior to collection.
  • Complete specimen collection in a timely manner without affecting quality or integrity of samples.
  • Demonstrate organizational skills by prioritizing collection requests and reconciling the pending list.
  • Perform duties independently with little or no supervision and assist others when assigned work is complete.
  • Return specimens to the lab to meet established turnaround times (TATs).
  • Manage specimen accessioning accurately and efficiently to provide quality specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Prioritize Stats, Routine, and blue bag specimens as they arrive in the lab and handle workload accurately.
  • Evaluate specimens for acceptability per policy and handle 24-hour urine container preparation and receipt.
  • Receive specimens accurately in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and resolve compliance issues as needed.
  • Provide customer service by answering technical questions and directing others to appropriate resources.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of Phlebotomy training.
  • H.S. diploma or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with computer and office equipment, organizational and team skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • 40 hours of internship in Phlebotomy.
  • Previous 1 year Phlebotomy experience.
  • Completion of a Phlebotomy certification class or accredited course, or military training, or on-the-job training.
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Systems.
