About the position

The Phlebotomist II at Geisinger Medical Laboratories is responsible for performing venipunctures and skin punctures to collect blood specimens from patients of all ages. This role is crucial in ensuring high-quality laboratory services and accurate patient care. The phlebotomist will also handle specimen processing, patient registration, and billing, while providing excellent interpersonal communication to comfort patients during the blood collection process. The position requires adherence to clinical standards and organizational policies, with opportunities for professional growth and development within the laboratory team.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Process specimens for analysis and ensure accurate patient registration and billing.
  • Exhibit interpersonal communication skills to explain the blood drawing process to patients.
  • Perform accessioning procedures to ensure positive identification of specimens.
  • Evaluate specimen suitability and resolve discrepancies as needed.
  • Conduct testing and maintain Point of Care instruments, including troubleshooting and quality control.
  • Handle and replenish reagents and supplies according to established protocols.
  • Provide phlebotomy coverage to various medical facilities and homebound patients as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of laboratory experience required.
  • Ability to perform venipunctures and skin punctures independently on all age groups.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), or certified medical assistant (CMA).
  • Military experience as a US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, or related medical specialties.
