About the position

The Phlebotomist II at Geisinger Medical Center is responsible for performing a variety of tasks to ensure the collection of high-quality specimens for testing. This role involves independently conducting venipunctures and skin punctures on patients of all ages, processing specimens, and utilizing computer systems for patient registration and billing. The position emphasizes interpersonal communication skills to explain procedures to patients and provide comfort during the blood drawing process.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Exhibit knowledge of adequate and correct collection requirements.
  • Perform accessioning procedures accurately to ensure positive identification of specimens.
  • Recognize and resolve discrepancies as appropriate.
  • Evaluate specimen suitability and acceptability.
  • Perform testing and record Point of Care instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control as assigned.
  • Handle and replenish reagents and supplies according to established protocols as assigned.
  • Follow established reporting procedures as appropriate.
  • Record and report problems and solutions as appropriate.
  • Navigate and access multiple computer applications as needed.
  • Provide phlebotomy coverage as required to Medical Group offices, skilled nursing facilities, or perform in-home phlebotomy for homebound patients.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA), or similar role is preferred.
  • Military experience as a US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, or related medical specialties will be considered.
