About the position

The Phlebotomist II at Geisinger Medical Clinic Lock Haven is responsible for performing venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens, ensuring the highest analytical quality for testing. This role involves processing specimens, utilizing computer systems for patient registration and billing, and providing excellent patient care through effective communication and comfort during procedures. The position requires a valid driver's license and involves working in various clinical environments, including home visits for patients who are homebound.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Exhibit knowledge of adequate and correct collection requirements.
  • Perform accessioning procedures accurately to ensure positive identification of specimens.
  • Recognize and resolve discrepancies as appropriate.
  • Evaluate specimen suitability and acceptability.
  • Perform testing and record Point of Care instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control as assigned.
  • Handle and replenish reagents and supplies according to established protocols as assigned.
  • Follow established reporting procedures as appropriate.
  • Record and report problems and solutions as appropriate.
  • Navigate and access multiple computer applications as needed.
  • Provide phlebotomy coverage as required to Medical Group offices, skilled nursing facilities, or perform in-home phlebotomy for homebound patients.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of laboratory experience required.
  • Valid Driver's License required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with various phlebotomy techniques and patient populations.
  • Certification from ASCP or similar organization.
