About the position

The Phlebotomist II at Geisinger Multi-Specialty Clinic is responsible for performing venipunctures and skin punctures to collect blood specimens from patients of all ages. This role is crucial in ensuring high-quality laboratory services and patient care by processing specimens accurately and efficiently. The phlebotomist will also handle patient registration, billing, and specimen accessioning while providing excellent interpersonal communication to comfort patients during the blood collection process.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Process specimens for analysis and ensure accurate patient registration and billing.
  • Exhibit knowledge of collection requirements and perform accessioning procedures accurately.
  • Evaluate specimen suitability and resolve discrepancies as needed.
  • Perform testing and maintain Point of Care instruments, including troubleshooting and quality control.
  • Handle and replenish reagents and supplies according to established protocols.
  • Navigate and access multiple computer applications for reporting and problem resolution.
  • Provide phlebotomy coverage to various medical group offices and homebound patients as required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of related work experience required.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), or certified medical assistant (CMA).
  • Military experience as a US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, or US Navy Hospital Corpsman.
