About the position

The Phlebotomist (GLH) is a part-time role responsible for performing venipunctures and skin punctures to collect blood specimens from patients of all ages. This position requires knowledge of specimen processing and the ability to utilize computer systems for patient registration and billing. The phlebotomist plays a crucial role in ensuring high-quality specimen collection and patient care, while also providing a comforting environment for patients during the blood collection process.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Exhibit knowledge of adequate and correct collection requirements.
  • Perform accessioning procedures accurately to ensure positive identification of specimens.
  • Demonstrate good problem-solving skills and resolve discrepancies as appropriate.
  • Evaluate specimen suitability and resolve or refer problems as necessary.
  • Perform testing and record Point-of-Care instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control as assigned.
  • Handle and replenish reagents and supplies according to established protocols.
  • Follow established reporting procedures, computerized, verbal, and manual, as appropriate.
  • Navigate and access multiple computer applications including laboratory and hospital computer systems.
  • Provide phlebotomy coverage as required to group offices, skilled nursing facilities, or perform in-home phlebotomy for homebound patients.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of healthcare experience preferred.
  • Certification from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Services (NAACLS) is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), or certified medical assistant (CMA) is considered.
  • Military experience as a US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, or US Navy Hospital Corpsman is considered.
