About the position

The Phlebotomist II at Geisinger Medical Laboratories is responsible for performing venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens from patients of all ages. This role is crucial in ensuring high-quality specimen collection and processing for laboratory testing, contributing to exceptional patient care. The position requires strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with patients and a commitment to following clinical guidelines and organizational policies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Exhibit knowledge of adequate and correct collection requirements.
  • Perform accessioning procedures accurately to ensure positive identification of specimens.
  • Recognize and resolve discrepancies as appropriate.
  • Evaluate specimen suitability and acceptability.
  • Resolve or refer problems as appropriate.
  • Perform testing and record Point of Care instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control as assigned.
  • Handle and replenish reagents and supplies according to established protocols as assigned.
  • Follow established reporting procedures as appropriate.
  • Record and report problems and solutions as appropriate.
  • Navigate and access multiple computer applications as needed.
  • Abide by related policies and procedures including compliance policies.
  • Provide phlebotomy coverage as required to Medical Group offices, skilled nursing facilities, or perform in-home phlebotomy for homebound patients.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Phlebotomy certification
  • Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA), or similar
  • Military experience as US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, or related medical specialties
  • Computer literacy and proficiency in navigating multiple computer applications
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a clinical laboratory setting
  • ASCP certification
  • Ability to work in a busy outpatient environment
