About the position

The position involves performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontaminating equipment. The candidate will be responsible for collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures, explaining the venipuncture process clearly and courteously, and demonstrating techniques using straight and butterfly needles. The role requires a thorough understanding of physicians' orders, matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, and ensuring all test requisitions are correct. Additionally, the candidate will package specimens for transport, store samples according to required temperatures, and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. Attendance at annual department trainings and answering telephone inquiries regarding laboratory results are also part of the responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontamination.
  • Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.
  • Properly explains the process of venipuncture blood drawing and other specimen collection.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Fully understand all of the physicians' orders.
  • Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure correctness.
  • Package specimens for transport.
  • Store specimen samples according to required temperature and accurately label them.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Requirements

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of Washington.
  • Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
