About the position

The Phlebotomist II Float at Quest Diagnostics serves as a vital representative of the company, interacting directly with patients who visit for routine health checks or significant health decisions. This role involves drawing quality blood samples and preparing specimens for laboratory testing, adhering to established practices and procedures. The Phlebotomist II Float is responsible for creating a trusting environment for patients, explaining procedures clearly, and ensuring that blood specimens are collected safely and accurately. This position may require the individual to direct daily activities at a Patient Service Center (PSC) or In-Office Phlebotomy (IOP) and may involve leading one or more Patient Service Representatives (PSR) on-site. In addition to specimen collection, the Phlebotomist II Float will demonstrate leadership behaviors and focus on process excellence while maintaining confidentiality and accuracy regarding patient information. The role may involve assignments in various settings, including doctor's offices, patient service centers, house calls, and long-term care facilities, depending on business needs. Responsibilities include collecting specimens for drug screens, biometric screenings, and insurance exams, administering oral solutions, and ensuring accurate data entry for patient registration and test orders. The Phlebotomist II Float will also be responsible for managing billing information, collecting payments, and safeguarding sensitive information. Other duties include performing clerical tasks, maintaining phlebotomy logs, assisting with inventory counts, and participating in special projects. The role requires ongoing training to stay updated on the latest phlebotomy techniques and may involve mentoring new employees to help them acclimate to the work environment. The Phlebotomist II Float must ensure compliance with departmental policies and safety protocols, maintain a clean and organized work environment, and communicate effectively with clients and team members.

Responsibilities

  • Draw quality blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for lab testing.
  • Direct daily activity at a Patient Service Center (PSC) or In-Office Phlebotomy (IOP).
  • Create an atmosphere of trust and confidence while explaining procedures to patients.
  • Collect specimens according to established procedures, including drug screens and biometric screenings.
  • Administer oral solutions as per established training.
  • Research test/client information and confirm all written and electronic orders using lab technology systems.
  • Complete all data entry requirements accurately, including patient registration and test orders.
  • Enter billing information and collect payments when required, safeguarding assets and credit card information.
  • Process specimens including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing as required by test orders.
  • Perform clerical duties such as data entry, inventory management, and answering phones when needed.
  • Read, understand, and comply with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Verify patient demographic information and ensure correct labeling of tubes post-venipuncture.
  • Assist with compilation and submission of monthly statistics and data.
  • Maintain phlebotomy logs in a timely manner based on frequency requirements.
  • Complete training courses and stay updated with the latest phlebotomy techniques.
  • Travel to Territory Manager meetings if held off-site or off normal shift.
  • Participate in special projects and teams as needed.
  • Perform Point of Care (POC) testing where required and complete training/competency evaluations.
  • Act as a mentor and resource for new employees, assisting with their transition into the PSC work environment.
  • Assist with periodic inventory counts and report shortages to supervisors.
  • Prepare schedules for the assigned workgroup or PSCs.
  • Communicate professionally with clients to resolve issues and document problems.
  • Ensure staff follows safety precautions and maintain a clean work environment.
  • Assist supervisors with the implementation of SOPs for phlebotomy services.

Requirements

  • Three years of phlebotomy experience, including pediatric, geriatric, and capillary collections.
  • Proficient in keyboard/data entry.
