In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing routine Phlebotomy (specimen procurement) via venipuncture, finger, or heel stick procedures following established protocol. The candidate should have a working knowledge of the laboratory information system for specimen accessioning, label generation, and other computer-related operations to facilitate specimen processing. Additionally, the Phlebotomist will be responsible for training and teaching of students and staff. In the absence of a supervisor, the Phlebotomist must assume job assignments and staffing responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine Phlebotomy (specimen procurement) via venipuncture, finger, or heel stick procedures following established protocol.
  • Demonstrate proper patient identification by using double identifiers and infection control practices.
  • Select venipuncture sites indicated by color bands and ensure proper usage and disposal of safety needles.
  • Match each barcode label against the wristband prior to placement on the tube.
  • Effectively draw patient blood samples with minimal repeats, hemolization, and wrong tube types.
  • Follow Central Processing policy related to computer functions.
  • Train and teach students and staff as needed.
  • Assume job assignments and staffing responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • 1 - 2 years of experience in a hospital and/or nursing home setting in all patient areas.
  • Basic computer skills required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Phlebotomy Certification preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.
