About The Position

The Phlebotomist position at KHI is a per diem role requiring a minimum of six shifts in six weeks, with a maximum of 19 hours per week. The role involves performing venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all ages while ensuring proper patient identification and adherence to the order of draw. The phlebotomist is expected to provide excellent customer service, minimize recollects due to errors, and deliver quality specimens to medical technologists. The position requires versatility in working environments, including outpatient, inpatient, surgical, emergency room, and trauma settings.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • BLS certification through American Heart Association or American Red Cross if working in inpatient/Emergency Department areas.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations related to urgent medical laboratory testing.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work effectively with hospital staff.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 year of phlebotomy experience.
  • Previous laboratory experience.
  • NHA, ASCP or other nationally recognized certification in Phlebotomy.

Responsibilities

  • Properly obtain venous and capillary blood samples assuring proper patient identification and labeling.
  • Use the hospital LIS system to collect and receive samples, cancel specimens, and reprint labels.
  • Participate in proper inventory control by stocking phlebotomy areas and checking inventory for acceptability and expiration dates.
  • Treat patients with courtesy and respect.
  • Be present and ready to work for all scheduled shifts and assist in covering other shifts as needed.
  • Care for electronic tools provided by the organization.
  • Complete initial and annual trainings, yearly competencies, and any assigned proficiencies.
  • Perform duties requested by lab supervisors and management.
  • Focus on proper collection techniques in diverse environments.
  • Perform I.V. line starts for blood draws in the inpatient/emergency department.
  • Respond to codes and traumas to obtain blood samples and assist in CPR if needed.
  • Perform full registration for outpatient services, including updating demographics and checking insurance.
