About the position

The Phlebotomist at ProMedica Lab is responsible for performing routine and special blood specimen collections for patients of all ages. This per diem position requires adherence to strict aseptic techniques and quality control procedures while ensuring excellent patient care and customer service. The role involves collaboration with laboratory teams and training new associates, all while maintaining compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Collects products or specimens for basic procedures and may perform point-of-care testing using proper techniques.
  • Follows strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis, assisting in patient care before, during, and after specimen collection.
  • Determines combinations of tests and acceptable minimum volumes from like samples, knowledgeable of pre-analytic variables affecting specimen analysis.
  • Utilizes laboratory computer information systems and quality assurance data to enhance services and recommend procedural changes.
  • Performs and documents quality control procedures.
  • Acts as a resource and liaison between phlebotomy staff and Laboratory/Point of Care Team.
  • Cross trained in defined core job functions and patient care departments.
  • Routinely performs difficult specimen collections, such as re-draws and misses.
  • Assists in the training of new associates or students.
  • Performs pre-analytic tasks associated with sample preparation, including centrifugation, decanting, and specimen packaging.
  • Maintains established hospital and departmental policies, objectives, quality assurance, safety, and infection control.
  • Maintains appropriate par levels and organizes supplies and equipment in work areas as assigned.
  • Maintains protocols for excellent patient care and follows infection control management guidelines.
  • Demonstrates good teamwork and adapts to changes in workflow and processes.
  • Performs other duties as directed or assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • A diploma from an accredited phlebotomy training institute or one year of phlebotomy experience.
  • Successful completion of an academic program with substantial practical clinical phlebotomy experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional registration preferred (i.e., PBT(ASCP)).
  • 1 year experience in a high-volume phlebotomy environment.
