About the position

The Phlebotomist Technician PRN role at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta involves overseeing the collection of blood specimens from patients, primarily children and adolescents, for laboratory use in diagnosing and treating diseases. The position requires effective collaboration with team members to meet patient needs while promoting a lean work culture and continuous process improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Collects laboratory specimens properly and safely from patients newborn through age 21 using excellent customer service skills.
  • Performs blood collection procedures for a variety of complex tests, including oral glucose tolerance tests and blood culture collection procedures.
  • Conducts sweat collections according to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation standards.
  • Follows universal standard precautions and complies with varying levels of isolation criteria during blood collections.
  • Performs various duties in the specimen processing area of the laboratory, including preparation of samples for testing and specimen management.
  • Identifies patients properly using two patient identifiers.
  • Prepares patients in a developmentally appropriate manner by recognizing needs and behaviors of various age groups.
  • Actively promotes a lean culture by performing duties to promote the consistent use of lean principles and processes.
  • Engages in continual process improvement by identifying waste, ineffective processes, and unsafe practices.
  • Performs clerical duties related to specimen collection and patient care.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience in phlebotomy, including venipuncture on newborns through adolescent age groups and laboratory processing.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Nice-to-haves

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology phlebotomy certification or equivalent.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • 1 year of experience in a pediatric hospital or performing venipunctures on newborns through adolescent age groups.
