About the position

The Phlebotomist is responsible to take blood samples from patients/residents in a skilled nursing facility setting. The phlebotomist prepares the testing cart with all the proper tools, keeping patients/residents calm while drawing blood and correctly labeling samples for further analysis in a medical laboratory. Phlebotomists are responsible for efficiently and accurately performing blood draws on patients/residents. The phlebotomist reports to and is supervised by the Director of Nursing Services.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing patients/residents before drawing blood
  • Explaining blood draw procedures to patients/residents and answering any questions about the process
  • Following all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas
  • Gathering medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags and test tubes
  • Verifying patient information and labeling blood samples properly and correctly
  • Identify patients and their personal information prior to lab draw
  • Accurately updating patient information in PCC
  • Reassure patients and help them remain calm during blood draws
  • Arrange daily activities based on urgency of requests for fluid samples
  • Determine the right venipuncture method based on patient age, health etc.
  • Find veins that are suitable for puncture
  • Draw blood using sterilized needles, vials and other equipment
  • Ensure optimal quality and quantity of samples
  • Label samples correctly and send or deliver them for testing
  • Answer patient questions and provide useful information
  • Keep accurate records on fluid specimens and tests
  • Adhere to all relevant health and infection control standards
  • Responsible to transport all lab specimens to laboratory office

Requirements

  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to display empathy
  • Proficient verbal and written English skills
  • Proven ability to prioritize a variety of tasks
  • Familiar with infection control policies and procedures
  • Highly organized, proactive, attentive to details and goal oriented
  • Ability to identify problems, think logically - or creatively, and devise practical solutions
  • Ability to prioritize and carry out work assignments independently and efficiently

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior phlebotomy experience with elderly population
  • CPR certification preferred
