About the position

The Phlebotomist position at Parrish Healthcare involves collecting blood specimens from patients using venipuncture and micro collection techniques. The role requires ensuring proper patient identification, interpreting physician orders, and documenting necessary information. The phlebotomist will work under the supervision of the Phlebotomy Supervisor and will be responsible for maintaining specimen integrity and adhering to established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Collect blood specimens from inpatients and outpatients using venipuncture and micro collection techniques.
• Confirm patient identification and verify appropriate preparation for blood draws.
• Interpret physician orders and confirm requested tests with patients.
• Document standing orders and explain expiration to patients.
• Utilize laboratory computer systems to manage laboratory requests and data.
• Educate patients about procedures and provide aftercare instructions.
• Process blood specimens and ensure safe transportation to the lab.
• Perform age-specific procedures in the Emergency Department after training.
• Conduct daily point-of-care quality checks when assigned to Express Testing.
• Organize workflow to prioritize activities and expedite testing.
• Adhere to confidentiality and corporate compliance policies.
• Serve as a preceptor to students and new employees.
• Participate in ordering lab supplies and special data collection projects.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 1 to 2 years of previous experience as a phlebotomist preferred, or completion of a phlebotomy training program.
• BLS certification through The American Heart Association required.
• Phlebotomy certification strongly preferred.
